Literacy Through the Arts (LTA):
Literacy Through the Arts builds students’ reading, writing and verbal expression skills through a multi-arts curriculum in theater, literature, music, visual arts and dance. Through art, K-2 students develop critical and creative thinking and a vocabulary to express ideas, stories and emotions. LTA is currently running in Grades K-2 at PS 15 and Hamilton Heights Elementary.
Literacy Through the Arts workshops were developed by teaching artists Lena Moy-Borgen and Shawn Shafner under the oversight of Arts For All Executive Director, Anna Roberts Ostroff, and prior PS 15 principal Thomas Staebell.
In LTA workshops, students use music, sound, movement, drama, visual art and storytelling to build syllabic and phonic awareness. Students use language, gesture and movement to express ideas, using new words to describe experiences. They write scripts and songs, and construct instruments and props. AFA organizes a final sharing for students and faculty at each school. LTA enhances students’ arts and non-arts skills in line with the Common Core as well as NYS Learning Standards for ELA and the Arts.
